Habitat for Humanity
Harbor Habitat for Humanity is doing amazing work in Benton Harbor and Benton Township to revitalize neighborhoods and transform peoples’ lives by building quality, affordable houses for families in our community. St. Augustine’s is blessed to be an active partner with Harbor Habitat.
Members of our congregation volunteer on the second Saturday of every month – and a few even more often than that! Houses are always in different stages of construction, so on any given second Saturday we might lay trusses, build walls, paint, or landscape. There’s a volunteer job for nearly everyone at Habitat – from master carpenters to people who don’t know which end of a hammer to hold. Building houses is the primary task, but building partnerships and relationships is every bit as important. We work side by side with the new homeowners, get to know their stories, and get to see the joy on their faces as their new home takes shape.
We know that many in our community live in substandard and downright awful housing. Harbor Habitat works with qualified applicants to help them buy a home of their own while putting in hundreds of hours in “sweat equity” both in labor and homeowner education. Volunteering with Harbor Habitat is a vital part of St. Augustine’s commitment to building a better community. If you would like to join us, please visit us, call the church office, or send an email. We welcome you!
